Hi, I’m Lia.
I’m a psychologist who writes code for a living.
Not the introduction I expected to give ten years ago, when I was sitting across from clients in a small office, trying to do healing work within a system that seemed designed to prevent it.
I have a Master’s degree in Psychology. Years of experience in institutional healthcare as a psychologist and team lead. And a growing certainty that the structures I was working within were failing the very people they were supposed to serve - therapists and clients alike.
So I did something terrifying but oh so very exciting. I went back to school. Again.
HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Python. Late nights. Certifications. The whole journey from full-time psychologist to full-stack developer. And along the way, I discovered that the same patience, attention to detail, perseverance and empathy that helped me in my work as a psychologist also aided me when building things that actually help people.
That’s how Therajava was born.
What I Do
I build custom websites for mental health professionals.
No templates. No drag-and-drop platforms. Hand-coded, intentional, fully-owned digital spaces that honor the work therapists do.
I started Therajava because I kept seeing the same problem: brilliant therapists with generic websites that didn’t represent them, didn’t protect their clients’ privacy, and didn’t help the right people find them. Websites built by developers who understood code but didn’t understand therapy.
So I became the bridge. Someone who understands both the technical requirements and the human weight of this work.
Who This Is For
You’re a therapist, psychologist, counselor, or mental health professional who:
Feels frustrated with institutional limitations but isn’t sure there’s another way
Suspects your website isn’t representing you well but doesn’t know where to start
Values depth over efficiency, relationship over transaction
Wants to understand the “why” behind recommendations, not just the “what”
Believes your digital presence should feel as intentional as your physical office
Is curious, skeptical, and tired of being sold quick fixes
You don’t need to understand code. You don’t need to be tech-savvy. You just need to care about doing this work sustainably and ethically.
What I Believe
Your work is invaluable, and it deserves to be honored - not compromised. The relationship between a therapist and client is one of the most profound human connections that exists. I don’t use generic templates or corporate platforms that sell your data. I build with full transparency and an unwavering commitment to doing this work honorably.
You deserve to fully own your digital presence. The code I write for you is yours - truly yours. You can take it to another developer tomorrow if you choose. No lock-in. No hidden terms. Your website should be an authentic expression of who you are, not a rental that constrains you.
Quality is not about perfectionism; it’s about genuine care. Hand-coding takes more time. It requires patience and attention to details others might miss. But it results in something that actually represents you, that protects your clients, that stands the test of time.
Privacy is protective care. Your clients trust you with their most vulnerable moments. That trust extends to their data, their digital footprints, the late-night searches that brought them to you. I build with the protective sensitivity that therapeutic work demands - not because regulations require it, but because people deserve it.
Sustainability is not a luxury. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Building a practice that honors your wellbeing, that reduces your burden instead of adding to it, that lets you show up fully for your clients - this is how you keep doing this work for the long haul.
What You’ll Find Here
This newsletter sits at the intersection of psychology, technology, and the business of healing work. I focus my writing on:
Craft & Code: Demystifying web development without talking down to you. Why hand-coding matters, what templates can’t give you, and how to think about your digital presence as an extension of your therapeutic self.
The Healing Garden: Psychology meets practice wisdom. The psychology of first impressions, why digital spaces need to feel safe, and how your website can actually prepare clients for the work you’ll do together.
Digital Sovereignty: Privacy, ethics, and ownership in an extractive digital landscape. What GDPR and HIPAA actually mean for your practice, why data protection is a form of care, and how to evaluate whether your tools are protecting you or exploiting you.
Roots & Growth: Sustainable, values-aligned practice building that honors your capacity. Marketing for therapists who dislike marketing. Preventing burnout while growing. Navigating business without losing your soul. A feminine approach to work: cyclical rhythms, rest as strategy, and rejecting hustle culture.
What to Expect
Research-backed, experience-informed, never rushed essays
Behind-the-scenes looks at what I’m building and learning
