Years of experience working with clients and leading teams. A deep, even idealistic, belief in the healing power of human connection. I was doing what I had trained for all my life, what I cared about, what I believed could make a difference in people’s lives. I wanted to make sure that no one felt alone with their problems.

And I was hitting walls everywhere.

The Frustration of Institutional Limitations

If you’ve worked in institutional healthcare, you know what I mean. The rigid structures and hierarchies. The administrative bloat. The way the system seems designed to prevent the very connection it’s supposed to facilitate.

I would sit with clients who desperately needed help, and I would know exactly what they needed - but I couldn’t provide it. Not because I lacked the skill or the will, but because the structure didn’t allow for it. Too many clients per day. Not enough time. Forms upon forms. More cost-saving group sessions than individual work. Every session of supervision was a hard-won battle, and even then the institution would cheapen out on the quality of the supervisor. Additional training at some point became an inside joke.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Under these circumstances I could only use but a fraction of what I was trained to do during my studies, which was backed up by research and proven as effective. The only metric the research missed was cost. That the poorly managed financial structure of the health care sector wouldn’t allow for.

I watched inspiring therapists (and doctors) lose their fire, give up or burn out, falling victim to clinic politics. I watched clients who yearned for support fall through the cracks, tucked away in their rooms with no hope for a normal, self-determined life in sight. I felt my own impact shrinking, squeezed by a system that seemed to care more about throughput and profits than healing and human dignity.

Maybe you’ve felt this too. Maybe you’re in private practice now because you couldn’t bear it anymore. Or maybe you’re still navigating those structures, wondering if there’s another way.

The Unexpected Discovery

I knew I couldn’t go on like this forever. I couldn’t do this to my clients and I couldn’t do this to myself. For a long time I felt lost. And then little occurrences started compiling until it hit me like a ton of bricks. The way out came from a childhood fascination I had nearly forgotten.

I had always been curious about how websites worked. Back in school, I dabbled with HTML, back when we still used tables for layout and CSS was too new to teach. Yes, I am that old. But when the time came to decide between Psychology and Computer Science, I chose Psychology - against the advice of my very wise math teacher back then. Darn savior complex, right?

I don’t regret it. While the institutions failed their patients, their employees and me, my coworkers and many of my team leads didn’t. Being surrounded by people who genuinely care about others is a whole different world than the cold atmosphere in tech jobs or the toxic positivity in other corporate environments that I have also come to witness. I have learned an immense amount from them and drew a lot of inspiration which I am very grateful for to this day.

Yet while I set my curiosity for programming aside in favor of helping people to the best of my ability, privately I still enjoyed playing around with tech. I even took a course in C++ at university. For fun, yes. But as I grew more frustrated with institutional limitations, I started paying attention to alternative paths.

At work I came in contact with self-employed counselors and therapists - very passionate, hard-working and inspiring people - and listened very intentionally to what they had to say about their work. The main difficulties always seemed to be client acquisition and administrative work.

So my not so little rabbit hole eventually led me to marketing which I also learned a lot about and which necessarily includes websites. And there it was again. That spark that I had almost forgotten.

I was standing at a crossroads and was asking myself: How can I combine my love for psychology and helping others with my passion for tech? Even though it had no tangible name or concept back then, that was the moment Therajava’s seed was planted.

Learning to Build

So I went back to studying. Again. Because that’s what I do.

HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Python. Certifications with top grades. Late nights fixing bugs, trying to translate what I envisioned into code for projects, learning about servers, networks and cybersecurity. I learned to see flaws in others’ websites, code and designs. And in my own. And a whole new world opened up before me. A new way of thinking. I went from a full-time psychologist to a full-stack developer. And honestly? It was as exciting as it was terrifying. And it still is.

Programming wasn’t so different from psychology. Both require patience and determination. LOTS of it. Both demand that you pay attention to details others might miss. Both are about creating structures that can hold something meaningful - whether that’s a therapeutic relationship or a digital experience.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

And both are fundamentally about problem-solving. In therapy, you’re helping someone navigate their inner world. In development, you’re creating tools that help people navigate their outer world. The skills transferred more than I expected.

Why Most Developers Don’t Get Therapy Work

As I grew more competent, I started noticing something else. The web development world is full of talented people who can build beautiful, functional websites. But when it comes to therapy and mental health work, something gets lost in translation.

Most developers don’t understand why a contact form isn’t just a contact form - it’s the first moment of vulnerability for someone who’s been suffering in silence. They don’t grasp why privacy isn’t an optional checkbox but a sacred trust. They don’t feel the weight of knowing that someone might be reading your website at 2 AM, desperate, deciding whether they’re worth helping.

They build for efficiency. For conversion rates. For user flows. And those things matter - but they miss the heart of what therapeutic work actually is.

I would look at websites built for therapists by developers who clearly had technical skill but no understanding of the work itself. Generic. Cold. All the right information presented in exactly the wrong way. Not just a new skill set. But a bridge between two worlds that desperately needed to connect.

Therapists who are brilliant at healing but struggling to be seen. Clients who need help but can’t find the right person because the digital landscape is too confusing, too cold, too overwhelming. A gap that technology could close - if it were built by someone who understood both sides.

I started Therajava because I couldn’t stop seeing the need. Therapists who wanted to focus on their clients, not on wrestling with templates and paperwork. Who deserved digital spaces that felt as intentional as their physical offices. Who needed someone to have their back so they could fully focus on the work only they could do.

Today, I split my time between code and the psychological understanding that informs it. I’m not a practicing psychologist anymore, but I’m still in service of healing. Just from a different angle. And I’m building the infrastructure that should have existed all along - because one person can only sit across from so many clients. But one person can build something that frees hundreds of therapists to have more capacity, in time and energy, for their clients AND for their own wellbeing.

I build websites that help therapists reach the clients who need them. I create tools that reduce administrative burden instead of adding to it. I translate between the technical world and the therapeutic world, helping each understand the other a little better.

And I keep learning. Because that’s what this work requires - the same curiosity, the same tolerance to not know, the same commitment to growth that I asked of my clients when I sat across from them in that small office years ago.

What I Learned

Here’s what three years of this journey have taught me:

Your past doesn’t have to be separate from your future. I thought I was leaving psychology behind. I wasn’t. I was finding a new way to serve the same mission. Every line of code I write is informed by what I learned sitting with clients in pain.

The systems that frustrate you can become the systems you rebuild. I hated the healthcare system’s limitations so much that I learned to build alternatives. Not to replace therapy - but to remove the barriers that prevent therapy from reaching the people who need it. The system is meant to work for you, not the other way around.

Most importantly: the work you care about matters, and the world needs you to do it sustainably. There is so much wrong with our world. So much harm is done to people that is invisible. But it’s there, haunting them every day, for years. Sometimes it holds them hostage their entire lives. You can help them free themselves. But you can’t help anyone if you are burned out and unhappy yourself. Investing in the right tools and structures means investing in your wellbeing and therefore in the wellbeing of your clients too. Building a practice that reflects your values isn’t a luxury. It’s how you keep doing this work for the long haul.

If you’re a therapist struggling with the business side of your practice, wondering if you’re doing this wrong because it feels so hard: you’re not. The system wasn’t built for the kind of work you do. But there are ways to navigate it that honor both your values and your sustainability.

You don’t have to become a developer. That’s my path, not yours. But you deserve tools that were built with your actual work in mind. You deserve a digital presence that feels like an extension of your therapeutic self, not a compromise you had to make.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

The gap between therapists and clients who need them is real. You spent 20 minutes choosing your website template.

Think about your physical office for a moment.

The way the light falls through the curtains. The particular shade of paint you chose because it helps people breathe easier. That piece of art on the wall - maybe it’s calming, maybe it sparks curiosity, maybe it simply feels like you. The chair you selected not just for comfort, but for what it signals: you are welcome here, you can settle in, you are safe.

Every detail in your office is intentional. You didn’t throw together whatever furniture was cheapest or copy the layout from the therapist down the hall. You created a sanctuary. A space that holds the particular kind of healing you offer.

Now think about your website.

Does it feel like that same sanctuary? But many therapy websites accidentally create the opposite feeling.

The First Session Happens Online

Think about it. The therapeutic relationship doesn’t begin when someone walks through your office door. It begins when they land on your website at 2 AM, unable to sleep, finally gathering the courage to reach out for help.

In that moment, they are not evaluating your credentials. Not really. They are asking themselves a deeper question: Can I be vulnerable with this person? Will they understand me? Do they feel safe?

They’re reading your words, yes. But they’re also absorbing something harder to articulate - the feeling of your presence. The warmth (or coldness) of the design. Whether the space feels curated and cared for, or generic and rushed. Whether it feels like a real person lives here, or like a corporate waiting room.

A template website can list your specialties. It can display your degrees. But it cannot transmit the intangible quality that makes someone think: This person gets it. This person is for me.

The Psychology of Digital First Impressions

Research on web credibility tells us something striking: users form judgments about trustworthiness in 50 milliseconds - literally faster than the blink of an eye.[1] In that fraction of a second, visual appeal becomes the primary determinant of whether someone stays or leaves.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" milliseconds.

A comprehensive study by Stanford’s Persuasive Technology Lab analyzed over 2,500 participants evaluating websites. The results were clear: “design look” was the most frequently mentioned factor in credibility assessments, appearing in 46.1% of all comments.[2] Participants noticed layout, typography, color schemes, and imagery before they engaged with a single word of content.

Even more telling is what researchers call the “amelioration effect.” When identical content was presented with different levels of aesthetic treatment, the better-designed version was rated as more credible in 90% of cases (19 out of 21 comparisons).[3] The same words. The same information. Different visual presentation. And credibility shifted dramatically.

The average time for someone to make a full credibility judgment is 3.42 seconds.[4] That’s how long you have to signal that you are trustworthy, professional, and human enough to make the visitor stay and keep engaging with your site.

When a potential client encounters yet another square-template therapist site with the same stock photo of someone staring peacefully out a window, their brain registers: generic, forgettable, safe to ignore. Not because you are any of those things. But because the container you’re presenting yourself in is.

Contrast that with a website that feels unmistakably yours - colors that match your energy, language that sounds like your actual voice, imagery that reflects your particular worldview. The difference isn’t superficial. It’s the difference between someone feeling invited into relationship versus feeling processed through a system.

What Templates Can’t Hold

In my work as a developer, I find it important to connect to my potential clients’ needs and problems, even if they are not aware of them themselves yet. So I study therapists’ websites.

As a former psychologist myself, I can see just how much passion my colleagues have for their work just by looking at their various trainings. All the time, effort and money they pour into improving themselves and their skills over years, genuinely wanting to serve their clients better. It is truly inspiring.

Potential clients on the other hand, seeking help, usually don’t have such insider’s appreciation for what they read there. It is hard to understand what those credentials really entail and if they would be of any help for that particular individual.

Most people have no clue about the difference between cognitive behavioral therapy and depth psychology, what EMDR is and if exposure therapy would be relevant for them in any way. They don’t know whether they need to look for someone proficient in helping with anxiety, OCD or CPTSD. Most of the time, the only thing they know is that something is wrong and they can’t deal with it on their own any longer.

What they are looking for is the feeling certain sites give them. But here the problems begin. How do people usually look for a therapist nowadays? They google. Some random therapists’ websites will pop up. Great, but none of them are close by, nor do they offer teletherapy.

So they might consult Google Maps to find therapists in their vicinity. And maybe some will be knowledgeable enough to search through a registry. What will they find?

There might be someone nearby so the way to the practice doesn’t feel as dreadful and troublesome. But all they get is a name, address and a phone. Nothing else. Does this make you feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable and call, hoping you might get through at the 20th attempt just to stammer about how you are too dumb to get the simplest things done and need help?

So they might finally find someone who has an actual website they can look at, hoping it will reassure them in their need to ask for help. However, that site offers only confusing lists and masses of text about academic achievements, a dry phone number and looks like it was made in the era of MS-DOS.

The next website looks a bit more inviting. Some pictures, a neater spacing, maybe a smiling face. Still doesn’t feel welcoming but better than the alternatives before, right? To their relief, they find a contact form giving them the opportunity to sort their thoughts in the privacy of their solitude. They gather all their courage and press the Send button. And then... nothing. No reaction, no response, not even a confirmation page you’d usually get when submitting forms in other contexts online.

They wait for a few days, nervousness building up even further over time. Till at some point it dawns on them. What is the message they receive with that experience? You don’t deserve help. You are alone.

Apart from my own research, I have heard SO many variations of this story from my own clients when I was working as a psychologist. Unanimously they all stated that looking for a therapist is just too much hassle and they rather deal with their problems on their own, despite knowing - from experience - that it will not suffice.

And with this state of affairs, therapists wonder why services such as BetterHelp are so popular. Templates give you presence without presence. Visibility without being seen. Your website exists, but it doesn’t reach anyone. It doesn’t transmit the particular quality of safety that makes someone think: This person. This is the one.

Your Website as Sanctuary

I believe every therapist deserves a digital space that functions like their physical office - a container that holds their work with integrity, that welcomes the right people in, that creates the conditions for healing before a single word is spoken in session.

This isn’t about aesthetics for aesthetics’ sake. It’s about alignment. When your outer presentation matches your inner reality, something relaxes in the system. You stop feeling like you’re performing a version of yourself online. Your website becomes an extension of your therapeutic presence rather than a separate thing you have to maintain.

<a class="image-link image2 feel this too. They may not consciously think “this design feels authentic,” but they register the coherence, the unity, the harmony. The sense that what they see is what they’ll get. The subtle message: I pay attention to detail. I care about creating safety. I show up fully, even in the spaces between us.

The Question Beneath the Question

When therapists ask me whether they should invest in a custom website, they’re often really asking something else: Is it worth it to have a space that truly represents me? Am I allowed to take up room in that way?

My answer is always yes.

You ask your clients to be courageous - to show up authentically (to show up at all), to stop hiding behind masks, to claim space for their own healing. Your website is where you model that same courage. Where you say: This is who I am. This is how I work. This is what it feels like to be with me.

That kind of clarity doesn’t just help you attract clients. It helps you attract the right clients. The ones who are ready for what you specifically offer. The ones who will do deep work with you because they recognized themselves in your digital sanctuary and knew they had found their person.

Your practice deserves more than a template. It deserves a digital home as thoughtfully created as the physical one where you sit with people in their most vulnerable moments.

<a including how your data is handled.

To this day, I don’t know exactly if it was the platform’s doing or some automated third-party script they allowed that collects the data of newly created sites of that platform. Either way, my data was disclosed on some public portal without my knowledge or consent the moment the website went live.

No warning, no opt-out, just my email suddenly exposed to every bot and low-quality marketer on the internet. Not to any potential clients, mind you. And since businesses are fair game for marketing, I couldn’t do anything about it. The flood never stopped, only once I finally shut the site down and stopped checking that cursed mailbox.

Nothing of the sort has ever happened with my own websites.

That experience taught me something crucial: when it comes to website builders for therapists, the real costs aren’t listed on the pricing page.

The Vendor Lock-In Trap

Most therapists don’t realize when they sign up for that $20-30/month website builder that you’re not buying a website. You’re renting one. And the landlord can change the terms whenever they want.

What happens when:

The platform raises prices? (And they will - it’s the business model - and yes, it happened to me)

They add features you don’t need but have to pay for?

They change their terms of service in ways that conflict with your practice values? (Yes, seen that happen to therapists)

They decide to shut down or get acquired?

You have three options: pay up, compromise your standards, or start over from scratch. Because you don’t own anything. Not the design, not the code, not even your content in some cases. Migration isn’t just difficult - from a user and develement point of view; it’s often designed to make leaving painful. Also, exporting your content often means losing formatting, functionality, and months of SEO work - forcing you to start from scratch.

And so the monthly costs creep from $25 to $75, then $120. Because you get all those new shiny features, right? Pity, they are not applicable for your use case. But leaving means rebuilding everything.

That’s not a business relationship - that’s a trap.

The Privacy Nightmare You’re Not Seeing

Let’s talk about what should concern every therapist most: data privacy.

When you use a template platform, you’re trusting them with:

Your contact information (as I learned the hard way)

Your client contact forms and inquiries

Potentially sensitive communication

Analytics about who’s visiting your site, when, how often and how they spend their time there

Most platforms come loaded with analytics tools, chat widgets, and marketing trackers that quietly collect detailed visitor behavior data - often without anyone’s explicit consent. Burying these details in dense privacy policies, they collect far more than you realize. This data flows to third-party providers (the ones supplying those extra tools), sometimes without the platform even knowing the full extent of the harvesting. The platform itself typically uses this information for internal profiling. But even if the platform limits its own data use, the third parties they share it with certainly don’t.

For example, if a website uses Google Fonts via their API, and many do, instead of self-hosting the font, then Google will track your website visitors by collecting at least their IP address and the webpage they are visiting. This is usually not something you can control or customize using a website builder.

If you don’t know or don’t state that in your privacy policy, you might want to start saving for a fine as there has already been a ruling because of it in the past. While Google claims (today) that they don’t use it “to create profiles of end users or for targeted advertising”, you have to place your trust in them that they don’t deceive you in any way and won’t ever change those terms.

In any case, remember that IP addresses are considered to be personal identifiers by HIPAA and GDPR. So extra care must be taken here. In our Google example, Google will know that the person with this IP address is looking for therapy - whatever Google claims - at least at the present time - how they use and store or not use and store this data. And there is nothing that stops them from changing their mind sometime in the future. Do you think they will write you a letter when they do?

For a therapist, this isn’t just inconvenient - it’s potentially unethical. Your clients don’t care about legalities, they care about their absolutely privacy in such matters.

Your clients are searching for help during vulnerable moments. They’re filling out contact forms, reading about trauma or depression or anxiety. Do you know what data is being collected about them? Do you know where it’s stored? Who has access? Whether it’s being sold to advertisers?

With most template platforms, the honest answer is: no, you don’t know. And you can’t control it.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" considerations:

The moment someone accesses your site, the moment someone fills out a contact form with health information, you’re in murky waters. Standard website builders - the ones most therapists start with - rarely offer the kind of Business Associate Agreements or data protection guarantees that mental health work demands.

In Europe, GDPR violations can result in massive fines. But beyond legal compliance, there’s an ethical question: can you truly promise confidentiality when you don’t control your own digital infrastructure?

The Sameness Problem (And Why It Costs You Clients)

Another pet peeve of mine when it comes to such platforms: they all look the same. If you have worked with one before, you recognize them across the web. You can somewhat customize their look, but they still feel the same. They miss individuality and therefore fail to represent the personality of the therapist compared to a custom website.

For a mental health practice, I believe, this personal touch is crucial and your potential clients can tell. Therapy is deeply personal. Clients aren’t just looking for credentials - they’re looking for someone who feels right. Someone they can trust and who is able to understand them and what they are going through. Someone whose approach resonates with them. Not just your expertise and CV.

You know how important rapport is in therapy and counseling. In our digital age, it doesn’t start in your office but online.

When someone is deciding whether to be vulnerable with you, generic design signals generic care, even when that’s not true. You blend into the background. The clients who would be perfect for your specific approach, your unique perspective, your particular way of creating safety - they scroll right past you.
<div cost? Lost clients. Clients who needed exactly what you offer but couldn’t see it through the generic template. Clients who went with someone else - maybe even a poorer fit - because that person’s website felt more authentic, more human, more them.

You can’t measure this cost in dollars, but it’s real. And it compounds over time.

The Compromise Cascade

Templates are meant to fit everyone but no one specifically. So website builders use ‘bloated’ code designed to work for everyone, which makes it nearly impossible to change one small detail not intended for customization without breaking the whole layout.

Here’s how it usually goes:

You start with a template. It’s fine - not perfect, but fine. You want to add a specific feature for your practice. Maybe a resource library for clients, or a particular way of booking an appointment, or a blog layout that sorts and filters your posts the way your clients need it.

The template doesn’t support it.

So you compromise. You adjust your vision to fit the template’s limitations. Then you want to customize the colors to match your practice aesthetic. The template offers six preset palettes. None quite right, but you pick the closest one.

Another compromise.

You want to remove a section that doesn’t apply to your work. It’s locked in the template structure. You pour your creativity into styling it to the best of your ability to match your vision but it still disrupts the flow.

Another compromise.

In the end, you’ve built a website that’s a shadow of what you actually wanted. It doesn’t quite represent you. It doesn’t quite serve your clients the way you envisioned. It’s just... fine.

And “fine” is expensive. Because “fine” doesn’t inspire trust. “Fine” doesn’t convert visitors into clients. “Fine” doesn’t feel like home.

What You’re Actually Paying For

Let’s do the math on a typical template platform over 5 years:

Monthly subscription: $30/month = $360/year

Premium features (booking, forms, etc.): +$20/month = $240/year

Custom domain: $20/year

Email hosting: $60/year

Total annual cost: $680

5-year cost: $3,400

And that’s very conservative. Many therapists end up paying $100+/month once they add all the features they actually need. And, other than the domain - depending on where they sourced it from, they still own nothing of it.

But the real cost isn’t the money. It’s:

The clients you didn’t attract because your site looked generic

The time spent fighting with template limitations

The stress of vendor dependency

The privacy risks you’re not even aware of

The compromise of having a digital presence that doesn’t truly represent you

There’s Another Way

I’m not saying this to scare you. I’m saying it because I’ve lived it over the years, and I’ve watched too many therapists struggle with poorly built sites too. Or even worse, have no online presence at all. Or being too intimidated by having to deal with this kind of hassle, on top of everything else, to start their own practice altogether.

I truly don’t mean this to be a rant against website builders at all. In fact, I very much appreciate their existence and they certainly have their purpose in many instances. However, I don’t believe they are suitable to use for therapists’ and counselors’ websites. The issues I mentioned above caused me quite a bit of frustration in the past and continue to do so for many mental health professionals. I don’t want my clients to feel this way. This is why I built Therajava differently.

When you own your website - truly own it, code and all - you’re not renting. You’re not trapped. You’re not compromising. Your data and your clients’ data are protected with the care that therapeutic work demands. Your website can actually represent who you are and how you work.

Hand-coding takes more time upfront. It requires someone who understands both the technical requirements and the unique needs of mental health work. But it’s an investment in ownership, privacy, and authenticity.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Here you are.

Maybe you’re staring at a template that looks almost right but not quite. Maybe you’re paying for features you don’t use because the platform bundled them in and now you can’t get rid of them. Maybe you’ve been meaning to update your website for months but every time you open it, you feel that familiar dread - the one that says this is not what I wanted, but I don’t know how to fix it.

Or maybe you don’t have a website at all. You are the clinician, the administrator, the marketer, the bookkeeper, and the IT department all at once. The administrative burden alone is staggering. Appointment scheduling, session notes, invoicing, insurance paperwork, GDPR compliance, privacy policies, email management.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, you’re supposed to have It’s too much. And the tools that promise to make it easier often make it worse.

The Template Trap

“Easy” website builders are seductive. Beautiful templates, drag-and-drop simplicity, “your website in minutes!” The promise is irresistible for someone working an emotionally demanding job while trying to have a fulfilling private life too.

But here’s what they don’t tell you on the pricing page.

You don’t own anything.

Not the design. Not the code. Not even your content in many cases. You’re renting. And the landlord can change the terms whenever they want: raise the prices, bundle in features you don’t need, change their terms of service in ways that conflict with your practice values, or simply shut down one day. Migration isn’t just difficult; it’s often designed to be nearly impossible. Not only because these platforms want you to stay, but because this is in fact a complex development task that does not pay well.

And so the monthly costs creep. From €25 to €75. Then €120. Because you get all those new shiny features, right? Pity they’re not applicable for your use case. But leaving means rebuilding everything.

That’s not a business relationship. That’s a trap.

Your data - and your clients’ data - is not safe.

Most platforms bury the details in dense privacy policies. They often collect far more data than you realize. This data is frequently shared with third parties - sometimes without the platform even being fully aware of the extent of it - and used for their own internal profiling.

Something as seemingly harmless as using Google Fonts via their API means Google collects your visitors’ IP addresses which does identify them. That’s usually not something you can control or customize using a website builder. If you don’t disclose it in your privacy policy, you might want to start saving for a fine - there has already been a ruling because of it in Europe.

For a therapist, this isn’t just inconvenient. It’s potentially unethical.

Your website doesn’t represent you.

If you’ve worked with one template platform before, you recognize them across the web. They all look the same. You can somewhat customize their look, but they still feel the same. They miss individuality and therefore fail to represent the personality of the therapist.

For a mental health practice, this personal touch is crucial. Your potential clients can tell. Therapy is deeply personal. Clients aren’t just looking for credentials -they’re looking for someone who feels right. Someone they can trust. Someone whose approach resonates with them.

When your website looks like every other therapist’s website, you don’t spark that needed emotional connection. You blend into the background. The clients who would be perfect for your specific approach, your unique perspective, your particular way of creating safety - they scroll right past you.
<div It’s about the clients who did reach out - who filled out your contact form with trembling hands, who gathered all their courage and pressed Send - and then heard nothing. Not because they offer better therapy. But because they removed the friction.

Your website can do the same - without compromising the depth and integrity of your work.

There Is Another Way

I built Therajava because I couldn’t stop seeing this gap.

Brilliant therapists with generic websites that didn’t represent them, didn’t protect their clients’ privacy, and didn’t help the right people find them. Websites built by developers who understood code but didn’t understand the first thing about sitting with someone in pain.

I’m a psychologist-turned-developer. I understand both worlds. And I built Therajava to bridge them.

Here’s what that looks like in practice.

What Therajava Offers

A website you truly own.

I hand-code every website from scratch. No templates. No drag-and-drop builders. No platforms that can change their terms tomorrow and leave you scrambling.

The code I write for you is yours. Truly yours. You can take it to another developer tomorrow if you choose - I actively encourage it and specifically write it in a way another developer can quickly and easily understand. No lock-in. No hidden terms. Your digital presence is your home, not a rental.

Privacy that honors your work.

I build with the protective sensitivity that mental health work demands. Every contact form, every data point, every third-party integration is considered through the lens of your ethical obligations to your clients.

GDPR- / HIPAA-compliant by design. Self-hosted where possible. No corporate platforms quietly harvesting your visitors’ data. Your clients’ trust is sacred - and your website should reflect that.

A digital space that feels like you.

Your website should feel like your office. The same intentionality. The same warmth. The same sense that someone who cares deeply about their work created this space.

I take the time to understand your approach, your personality, your particular way of being with clients and I translate that into a digital presence that helps the right people recognize you. Not a generic version of a therapist. You.

Tools that reduce your burden, not add to it.

Beyond the website itself, Therajava offers self-hosted digital tools built specifically for mental health professionals:

Secure appointment scheduling

Private video conferencing for teletherapy

Contact forms that feel like an open door, not a bureaucratic hurdle

Client management dashboards

Ethical email hosting

SEO that honors your voice

Everything designed to give you back the time and energy you need to focus on your actual work.

Quality Over Quantity. Always.

Hand-coding takes more time than using a template. I won’t pretend otherwise.

But it results in something that actually represents you. That actually protects your clients. That actually lasts. I and Therajava decidedly stand for quality over quantity - not blind perfectionism, but genuine care for the details that matter.

Your practice deserves a digital home, not a rental. Your clients deserve to find the real you, not a template version. And you deserve to sleep at night knowing your digital presence is truly yours.

Let’s Plant Your Digital Healing Garden

The lotus rises from the mud - a symbol of strength, healing, and transformation. This is what drives everything I build at Therajava: creating spaces where people can blossom despite challenging circumstances.

<a class="image-link
